The Ochoa/Heglund Mallet Duo emerged from a DMA project initiated by Carlos Ochoa as part of his graduate studies in percussion with Andy Heglund at the University of Nevada, Reno, beginning in 2022. The concept behind the duo was to explore the dynamic interplay between marimba and vibraphone using lead sheets to develop accompaniment ideas, arrangements, improvisation, and compositions. The duo’s success, along with the positive audience feedback, led to its formal formation. Since then, Carlos Ochoa and Andy Heglund have performed at high schools in Nevada and Northern California, were recently featured with Harmony on the River as part of Artown, the Lake Tahoe Music Camp, and the 2024 Northern Nevada Day of Percussion. Andy Heglund has been teaching percussion at the University of Nevada, Reno since 1998. Carlos Ochoa recently completed his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree at the University of Nevada, Reno.
